Several class policies are required to define the relationships between students and the instructor. A degree of formality is necessary to guarantee each student a maximum opportunity to learn the subject material of the class. The following class policies will assure a degree of order necessary to achieve the learning objective.
ATTENDANCE:
A. Absences-Class work is a major portion of the grade earned in this class. Therefore, your class attendance is of utmost importance. Students with excessive absences will be referred to the attendance office. Unexcused absences will result in a 0% for classroom participation that particular day, reflected in the subjective grade. Each unexcused absence will also lower the nine weeks grade by one half-letter grade, in accordance with school policy.
B. Make-up Work-Students are responsible to see the instructor for make-up work, at which time deadlines will be set. Late work is unacceptable. Make-up exams will be given in essay form before or after school by appointment. Failure to comply with scheduled make-up will result in an automatic 0%.
C. Tardiness-Tardiness is a symptom of personal irresponsibility; it is also rude to both the instructor and fellow students. In an effort to discourage students from being tardy, the instructor has devised specific class policies and punishment in addition to the school tardy policy. Upon the first tardy the student will be given a penalty assignment to be completed on his/her own time. The student will not be permitted to participate in classroom activities the following class meeting without completion of the assigned penalty assignment and will receive a 0% for classroom participation that particular day. However, that day's class work may be completed by a homework assignment. Each additional tardy will result in a lengthier penalty assignment. Tardiness will also result in a lower subjective grade, as students will have appropriate points deducted for each tardy.
GRADING:
A. Objective Grading-Approximately two-thirds of a student's grade results from objective achievement. Examples include worksheets, quizzes, tests, homework, etc. This grade is a measure of performance. Work will not be accepted if written in the color red.
B. Subjective Grading-A subjective grade will be determined periodically, resulting in approximately one third of the student's grade. This grade will reflect the combined participation, attitude, behavior and attendance of the student as the teacher sees it. Absences and tardies can drastically affect the subjective grade.
CONDUCT:
A. Talking-Disruptive talking will not be tolerated.
B. Eating and Drinking-Absolutely no food or beverages are to be consumed in the classroom. The only exception will be when it is prepared as a class assignment, and will be so designated by the instructor.
1. Discreet gum chewing is acceptable, provided gum remains in the student's mouth and wrappers and gum are neatly disposed of. The instructor can selectively ban gum chewing at any time for a particular student, or an entire class.
2. The chewing of tobacco or other substances is prohibited under any circumstances.
C. Seating Arrangements-Seating charts will be drawn up at he beginning of each semester and changed periodically as the need arises. Students will sit in their designated seats, unless told otherwise by the instructor.
D. Hall Passes-Hall passes will be issued for special needs. The instructor will determine the validity of these needs. Students who abuse hall pass privileges will forfeit them.
E. Class Equipment-Students must bring pencil/pen to class every day. Failure to bring necessary materials to class will result in lower subjective grade.
F. Dismissal- Students are to remain seated until dismissed by instructor. No one is to line up at the door early, or leave without permission.
G. Disruptive Behavior-DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!!!
