This course is designed to provide an
in-depth survey of the intercontinental world-wide relationships of issues,
events, people, ethnic groups, places, natural resources and government
formations which have affected the development of the world’s nations and
cultures. This year long survey course reviews ancient history, world
religions, and geographical concepts, along with the development of eastern and
western cultures. This course links concepts of previous world history classes,
presents information from the Middle Ages and Modern History, links the founding
principles of democracy, and presents the impact of current world events on the
global community. With this presentation of historical context, students will
develop a sense of how history has affected our society. The curriculum covered
in World History/Geography is in compliance with the Nevada State Standards and
the Carson City School District Curriculum Map.

This course is designed to provide an
in-depth survey of the intercontinental world-wide relationships of issues,
events, people, ethnic groups, places, natural resources and legislation which
have affected the development of the world's nations and cultures. The
conceptual review of the chronological historical developments beginning with
the growth of nations, Renaissance and Reformation periods, age of discovery and
absolutism, and their relationships to the present will link the concepts of
previous world history classes with the events of the present. There will be an
emphasis on challenging students to strive for excellence. Success in this
honors course requires strong writing skills, superior reading comprehension,
and high level analytical skills. Much emphasis will be placed on the research
component of the course where the students will learn to utilize methods of
research, individual report writing, projects, and presentations. Prerequisite:
Students must meet honors standards set by the Social Studies Department.
Credit in this course applies toward the Honors Diploma. The curriculum
covered in World History/Geography (Honors) is in compliance with the Nevada
State Standards and the Carson City School District Curriculum Map.
U.S. HISTORY

The United States History course is
designed to provide a survey of the historical relationship or issues, events,
people, ethnic groups, places, inventions, natural resources, and government to
the development of our nation. This year long course reviews the chronology of
historical events and their relationships beginning with a review of the
formation of the United States, the philosophy of the Revolutionary Period, and
the settlement of the West, leading into the study of the Civil War and
Reconstruction Era. The course continues through the 1800’s, 1900’s, and 2000’s
focusing on people, places, and events who influence or influenced the
development of the United States. The curriculum covered in U.S. History is in
compliance with the Nevada State Standards and the Carson City School District
Curriculum Map.

The primary goal of this course is to allow college bound juniors an opportunity
to study U.S. History in an in-depth, critical approach. This course allows
students to exercise critical thinking skills, writing skills, and analytical
skills in studying the emergence of the United States as a new nation to a world
power. An in-depth survey of the historical relationship of issues, events,
people, ethnic groups, places, inventions, natural resources and legislation to
the development of the United States will occur, as well as a preparation for
success on the AP exam. An Advanced Placement Contract must be
signed in order to take the class. Students will be required to complete
a summer assignment. Students must take the Advanced Placement Exam in
May. The Advanced Placement Exam fee is approximately $85, which is
non-refundable and must be paid by the end of the first quarter.
Prerequisite: Any of the following two: PSAT Test, teacher recommendation,
Honors World History, demonstration of strong writing skills, a B or above in
English and World History. Students may gain college credit by passing
the Advanced Placement Examination. Credit in this course applies toward
the Honors Diploma. Lab/Exam Fee: Approximately $85. The curriculum covered
in U.S. History, AP is in compliance with the Nevada State Standards and the

AMERICAN GOVERNMENT

The primary aim of this course is to prepare students to take their places as
active full-fledged and responsible citizens who recognize the various levels of
government process, authority and the value of liberties provided by the
constitution. The course provides a structured inquiry into the functions and
processes of the executive, judicial and legislative branches of the federal,
state and local governments. In addition, it seeks to aid the students to
internalize the historical and current political, social, legal and economic
influences which affect their lives. These principles should awaken the need to
understand the rights, duties and responsibilities of our people. The curriculum
covered in U.S. History is in compliance with the Nevada State Standards and the
Carson City School District Curriculum Map.
GOVERNMENT, AP

This course is designed to give
college-bound seniors a critical perspective on politics and government in the
United States. This course involves both the study of general concepts used to
interpret American politics and the analysis of specific case studies. It also
requires familiarity with the various institutions, groups, beliefs, and ideas
that make up the American political reality. This is a college-level course for
U.S. Government credit. An Advanced
Placement Contract must be signed in order to take the class. Students

Psychology helps people understand themselves, other people and the society they
live in. For the individual, psychology provides insight into the forces that
make each person unique with increased understanding of themselves; people can
learn to live life to the fullest. By understanding others they improve
interpersonal relations. Knowledge of their culture gives people a chance to
work within the society to find a maximum degree of self-fulfillment. This
course is interdisciplinary in nature, will encourage student participation and
inquiry, will explore ideas and issues and will seek to develop the students’
affective as well as intellectual skills. . This course will fulfill the
humanities graduation requirement.

The purpose of the Advanced Placement course in psychology is to introduce
students to the systematic and scientific study of the behavior and mental
processes of human beings and other animals. Students are exposed to the
psychological facts, principles and phenomena associated with each of the major
subfields within psychology. Students also learn about the methods psychologists
use in their science and practice. Prerequisite for the course is one year of
psychology with a B or better. Students will be required to take the Advanced
Placement Exam in May. The fee for the exam is $85. This is a non-refundable fee
and must be paid by the end of the first semester. Students not paying the exam
fee will be dropped at the end of the first semester. This course applies toward
the humanities graduation requirement. Students may gain college credit by
passing the Advanced Placement Examination. Credit in this course applies toward
the Honors Diploma. Credit in this course applies toward the Honors Diploma.

SOCIOLOGY

This social science course gives attention to the study of the development of
humans and their life in groups. The course analyzes human behavior in small
groups, the rules and values of people, communication, and cultural
interactions. From there the course will survey social institutions, social
problems and social interaction. This course is interdisciplinary in nature,
will encourage student participation and inquiry, will explore ideas and issues
and will seek to develop the students’ affective as well as intellectual skills. This course will fulfill the humanities graduation requirement.
