The State
Department of Education requires two years of Physical Education for all
students.
PHYSICAL
EDUCATION GUIDELINES:
*A maximum of
two (2) high school credits may be earned in PHYSICAL EDUCATION.
*Students
enrolled in NJROTC will be exempt from taking P.E. (see NJROTC course
description).
*Students may
not take more than one (1) Physical Education course in their schedule during
a school year.
*A student may
fulfill a maximum of TWO creditS
in Physical Education if the student participates in interscholastic
athletics if:
a. The activity is sponsored by Carson High School;
b. The pupil actively participates in the activity for at
least 120 hours to earn one credit,
at least 60 hours to earn 1/2 credit; and
c. The coach or sponsor must keep track of the necessary
hours and turn the verification
in to the Athletic Director’s Secretary at the end of the semester the activity is
completed.
d. A grade of Pass will be given and will not
affect the GPA.
*Musical
Theater will fulfill the Physical Education requirement.
*Up to two
credits in Independent Study P.E. are offered to sophomores and juniors
particip-
ating outside of school in activities such as dance, karate,
swimming, etc. Students interested in
this Independent Study P.E. program
must contact the Vice Principal. Students may not do
Independent PE
if they have already fulfilled their PE requirement.
UNIFORM:
All P.E. and weightlifting students must be outfitted in regulation gym clothes.
The uniform consists of colored shorts and a colored
T-shirt. Gym uniforms may be purchased
at the Student Store. The
cost of the complete uniform will be $20. The wearing of sweat tops
and sweat pants for cool weather is optional. These items will also
be available at the Student
Store for an additional cost of $22 for
sweat pants and $25 to $40 for sweat tops. Names will
be required on all uniforms to help prevent theft or loss. We will separate
P.E. and weightlifters
by different colored uniforms. Our goal is
to build school spirit and unity, and promote good
hygiene for
students.
PERSONAL FITNESS

This coeducational Physical Education class will focus on various aspects of physical fitness with emphasis on students achieving and maintaining a health-enhancing level of individual fitness for an active lifestyle. This class focuses on students developing their own fitness routine. Standard P.E. uniform required.
ADAPTIVE P.E.

Adaptive Physical Education is designed for students with special needs who would benefit more from a individualized and developmental physical education program. Peer tutors are essential to the success of this class. Tutors should possess a positive attitude towards all activities and be comfortable with this exceptional population. An interview is required prior to enrollment. This course may be repeated for credit. A uniform and good attendance is required.
MARTIAL ARTS (BEGINNING)Semester/Full Year

Martial Arts Class will study the art of Jujitsu. This Co-Ed class is physically demanding and requires full participation. Jujitsu involves techniques that include joint manipulations, throws, chokes, and various other strategies used for self-defense. Lab Fee: $40 for a uniform.
MARTIAL ARTS (ADVANCED)Semester/Full Year

This Co-Ed class will study advanced Jujitsu techniques. These techniques would involve joint manipulations, throws, chokes, and various other strategies used for self-defense. This class is physically demanding and requires full participation. Prerequisite: Beginning Martial Arts and/or teacher approval. Lab Fee: $40 for a uniform.

This Physical Education class focuses on traditional team sports such as soccer, softball, flag football, basketball, volleyball, and lacrosse. Individual sports such as bowling, tennis, badminton, archery, and tumbling will also be explored. This class will be designated male or female. Fees will be required for some off campus activities. Standard P.E. uniform required.

Each student's individual needs will be assessed and realistic goals will be established. This course will emphasize the use of free weights, resistance training, power training, endurance training, plyometrics, running, and aerobics in order to increase strength and conditioning. This class will be designated male or female. Enrollment is limited due to space. A standard PE uniform is required.
CARE & PREVENTION OF ATHLETIC INJURIESFull Year

This course is an activity-based experience during which students will be introduced to the fundamentals of Sports Medicine. The course will cover the four areas of Athletic Training which are prevention, evaluation, management, and rehabilitation of common sports injuries, as well as the related health fields such as exercise physiology, kinesiology, and biomechanics. Basic anatomy, medical terminology, taping, bracing, rehabilitation techniques, basic first aid and CPR will be taught. Students will work as student athletic trainers for various sporting events at Carson High School. Students will learn how to apply their knowledge to real life situations through their lab time and work with the sports teams. Participation in the Skills USA program is expected. Prerequisite: Minimum of 2.50 GPA required. Lab Fee: $10.

This course is required of all freshmen to meet the health graduation requirement. Health is designed to offer the student a realistic view of the health and safety aspects of their own daily activities. The curriculum is designed to address the State Standards. Instruction will include studying human growth and development, effects of drugs, alcohol and tobacco, disease control and prevention, community health, accident prevention, safety and first aid, nutritional health, consumer health. This course is taught in conjunction with Computer Literacy to fulfill the Health/Computer Literacy requirement.
