The major goal of this class, and specifically the education for students with mild to severe handicaps, is the development of necessary skills for them to actively participate in their present and future environments (home, leisure, community, vocational) with maximum independence. The use of community resources as an instructional setting for these students complements the on-going classroom instruction and allows for the utilization of skills in the students' natural environments.

This class is designed for students with mild to moderate handicaps that qualify. The focus of the class will be a study of the functions of the human body, human sexuality, health and wellness, hygiene, nutrition, substance abuse and grooming.

This class will focus on the study programs and homework assignments of students who are participating in Community Skills and Learning Lab classes. These students will receive individualized help with ongoing assignments to keep current with daily instruction.

Phonology, written language, and comprehension are taught in a systematic, sequential, multi-sensory way. Recommended for students who learn best from a hands on approach to learning. Teaching is done in small groups or on an individualized basis. This class may be repeated for credit.

This class will focus on functional mathematics activities necessary for students in the community skills program to actively participate in their present and future environments with maximum independence. The emphasis of classroom instruction will be on students learning time concepts, money concepts, measurement, making purchases in the community, basic banking skills, and related math and community vocabulary. On-going classroom instruction will be combined with utilization of mathematics skills in the instructional setting of the community.

DEVELOPMENT

This course is designed to develop strategies for reading various materials. Students will receive instruction in reading with a focus on decoding, comprehension, vocabulary and memory skills. Reading materials will include magazine articles, the newspaper, short stories and chapter books. Some simple technology will be used. Written and oral assignments related to reading selections will be required. (R.L. 2nd through end of 4th)

GOVERNMENT

This course is to prepare students to take their places as active full-fledged, and responsible citizens who recognize the various levels of government process, authority and the value of liberties provided by the Constitution. The course provides a structured inquiry into the functions and processes of the executive, judicial, and legislative branches of the federal, state, and local governments. This course may satisfy the American Government graduation requirement.

Students will study certain aspects of paragraph structure and development, sentence structure and how the sentence works, basic punctuation, build a workable and recognizable vocabulary, and read short stories and a novel. Grammar will be studied by identifying the main parts of speech. Students will acquire responsibility skills, and prepare for advancement into an English I or English II class. This course may satisfy English graduation requirements and may be repeated for credit.

This course is for students who are placed in Special Education under the criteria of the Hearing Impaired Program. Reading and writing skills necessary for academic classes will be emphasized. Students will be taught study strategies to successfully complete assignments from core academic classes. Structured practice will be provided to guide students toward self advocacy, responsibility, and independent use of study strategies. This course may be repeated for credit.
LL MATH I

This is a basic mathematics program designed to help identified students improve basic skills and achieve the minimum proficiency required for graduation. This course may satisfy the mathematics graduation credit requirements and may be repeated for credit.

This class is designed for sophomores and juniors taking the Nevada Proficiency Exam. The placement of students will be determined by the special education teachers. Curriculum includes algebraic and geometric concepts such as percents, ratio, probability, inequalities, slope intercept, combination problems, etc.
LL PROFICIENCY ENGLISH

This class is geared for juniors and seniors to help them prepare for the written and reading portion of the Nevada Proficiency Exam. This class will focus on paragraph writing, vocabulary building, and reading comprehension skills. Students with the potential to pass the proficiency exam and who are recommended by their responsibility teacher, will be eligible to take this class.

The curriculum for this class consists of review of concepts from LL Math I and LL Math II, and an intensive overview/practice of the Nevada High School Math Proficiency Exam. The placement of students will be determined by special education teachers.
LL READ 180
Full Year

LL Read 180 is an intensive reading intervention program designed to meet the needs of students whose reading achievement is far below the proficient grade level. The program directly addresses individual needs through adaptive and instructional software, high interest literature, and direct instruction on reading strategies. Students take two periods of LL Read 180 and earn 1 credit in English and 1 credit for an elective. Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation and student Lexile test scores will determine enrollment.

This class is designed to give the students a basic understanding of geography (the world), current events (what is happening in the world, nation, local), and government (nation, state, local). This course will emphasize preparing students to be active, responsible citizens by being aware of current news, where events are happening and the structure, functions, and processes on all levels of government. This class will use a variety of study materials including: newspaper, magazines, TV news, videos, pictures, computer, maps, as well as text books. Prerequisites: Students must be able to read 2nd grade level.
CBI/VOCATIONAL
TRAINING

This course will combine the skills necessary for seeking and retaining employment. Work experience in the community will be combined with filling out forms, developing acceptable social skills, and developing a good work ethic. This class is based on referral only by teacher and may be repeated for credit. This class is offered through the LL Community Skills and/or LL Community Skills Individualized Study Classes and must be approved by the responsibility teacher.
